1st August marks the Celtic festival of Lughnasadh (pronounced Loo-nah-sah), a sacred turning point on the Wheel of the Year.
Also known as Lammas, this ancient festival celebrates the first fruits of the harvest, the gifts of the Earth, and the abundance we are creating in our lives.
It’s a time to pause, reflect, and give thanks for all that is growing – not only in the fields but within our hearts, homes, and souls.
🌿 What Is Lughnasadh?
Lughnasadh is named after the Celtic god Lugh, a warrior and master of many arts. The festival traditionally honoured his foster mother, Tailtiu, who died after clearing the land for agriculture. In her honour, communities gathered to celebrate grain harvests, skills, and community achievements.
Today, we honour Lughnasadh as a time to:
- Celebrate abundance
- Gather in community
- Reflect on personal growth
- Give thanks to the land and nature
🌻 Ways to Celebrate Lughnasadh
🌾 1. Create a Harvest Altar
Decorate with wheat, corn, berries, sunflowers, apples, or gold and orange candles. Add items that represent what you are grateful for or have cultivated this year.
✍️ 2. Harvest Your Inner Growth
Journal on the following:
- What have I grown this year – physically, spiritually, emotionally?
- What am I ready to celebrate or share with others?
- Where can I offer gratitude?
🔥 3. Have a Fire Ceremony or Candle Ritual
Light a candle or small fire. Speak aloud your gratitude for what you have harvested. Offer herbs (like rosemary, sage, or thyme) to the flame in thanks.
🍞 4. Bake Bread or Share Food
Lughnasadh was traditionally a bread festival. Bake or bless a meal with intention. Sharing food – even virtually or energetically – is an offering to the Earth and each other.
💎 5. Work with Crystals of Abundance
Try:
- Citrine – manifestation and prosperity
- Rutilated Quartz – sacred action
- Sunstone – confidence, joy, and vitality
- Amber – ancient warmth and protection
🌕 A Time of Gratitude and Letting Go
While Lughnasadh celebrates growth, it also reminds us of impermanence. The days slowly begin to shorten. We are called to harvest what is ready and begin releasing what is complete. It’s a powerful moment to honour both fullness and endings.
✨ Ritual Affirmation:
“I honour the light within and around me. I celebrate what I have grown and offer gratitude for all that sustains me. I trust in the cycles of creation and rest.”
